Sandymount Dodder Wheelers Charity Sportive 2024

It would be fair to say that records weren’t set, but that they were smashed out of the park on multiple fronts over the last few days/weeks. When the club set out to plan the Charity Event for 2024 and they reached out to the member base to nominate a charity and the Irish Cancer Society was chosen. At the time we all felt that €10,000 as a goal was a lofty one to achieve, but nonetheless we set it as our target. To say we smashed that is a bit of an understatement, because at the time of writing this piece the club has raised over €23,000 which is a massive achievement for such a small and relatively young club.

Not only did we surpass the initial target we set, but we also had an incredible turnout on the day. In total, we had close to 70 members and 5 guests of our new club sponsor, Movement Fitness led by Mark Ward (owner and proprietor). The club had two routes; a 125k for the more adventurous and a 60k, which in itself is also, no mean feat. Huge thanks must go out to all the group leaders on the day (Vincent, Gerry, Christine, Dominic, Owen, Ger, Ena & Declan) who brought everyone home safe and sound. In addition, none of this would have been possible with out the support of our two two men in a van (Peter & Pat).

Although the weather wasn’t sunny, it remained relatively dry, which is always a bonus. With two start times from the Movement Fitness premises at 8am and 11am the event finished up in O’Reillys of Sandymount for some well earned (liquid) refreshments. Overall, it was felt by all that we had a fantastic day. Thank you to all who took part and to those who dug deep and supported a well worthwhile cause; members, friends and families alike.
